Bringing spirituality, youth and activism together
rit.
This event was a day long retreat held at and co-sponsored by the Multi-faith Centre at the University of Toronto. The purpose of the day was to gather local youth from similar and diverse backgrounds to allow for the exchange of ideas, community building and the promotion of a globalized worldview based unity and integration. The keynote speaker for the event was Philip Starkman, a meditation instructor and founder of Spring Rain Sangha, a Buddhist organization in Toronto. Philip opened up the morning with a short guided meditation and an introductory discourse on the tenets of Buddhism. Following this, the attendees had the opportunity to get to know each other and engage in dialogue in theme of “Inner Peace for Social Change”. The group examined concepts of personal responsibility within an integrated system and the role of community building in fostering emerging paradigms. All in all, there appeared to be a consensus that the retreat was an inspiring one, that future events would be welcomed and that some were willing to take on an active role in growing this hub.
Attendance of 19 youth exceeded expectations - The lunch provided was tasty and enjoyed by all - Philip’s instruction was well received, and was both insightful and accessible -The attendees seemed to have little difficulty connecting with each other and carrying on the conversation with little intervention from the facilitator.
This event established a basic framework for which future events can be based off of -The aim is to build momentum over the coming months in preparation for a weekend retreat in May -Next event is scheduled for February with hopes of having Diane Longboat as the keynote speaker -Instead of providing lunch, food will be provided on a potluck basis.
